Los Reales Landfill Plans for the Future

Los Reales Landfill

Los Reales Landfill is located within a City-owned property of approximately 1,122 acres. To extend the life of the landfill, the City is expanding the existing disposal area to the west and south, and will increase the height of the landfill by an average of 100 feet. Eventually, the disposal area will cover approximately 400 acres.

In 2005, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approved the landfill permit through 2067. This will extend the life of the landfill for approximately 60 years. More than half of the 1000-acre property will be set aside as open space or protected habitat.

The landfill will be designed with a natural, hilly shape that will blend in with the surrounding desert landscape. Additionally, the placement of landfill facilities and the use of screening elements, such as vegetation, along the property boundaries will minimize the impact of landfill operations on neighborhoods adjacent to Los Reales. The project design has incorporated ideas generated through discussions with neighboring residents and businesses.

(2014-2024), CDM Smith, Nov. 11, 2014

The City of Tucson's Los Reales Landfill located at 5300 E. Los Reales Road has begun development and design for new entrance facilities for the landfill. The first phase of the plans includes construction of the new entrance on Craycroft Road and will include new Scale Facilities, Administrative Offices, and a Truck Wheel Wash. Future construction will add Drop-off areas for recyclables, and a Self-Haul Convenience Center. A general overview of the proposed traffic circulation plan and preliminary site design are illustrated on the plan (see below). Construction for Phase 1 will begin in Spring 2014 and will be complete before the end of the year.
